Some Basic Facts
The Maori tribes lived in tribes mostly in New Zealand and Australia. They are the indigenous people from Polynesia. It is mostly likely that they arrived in Polynesia in several waves sometime before year 1300. They also spoke the language “Te Reo Māori” (Maoritanga), which is related to Tahitian and Hawaiian, but it is very few of those who are left that speak the language today. In the Maori language, Maori means “Natural”, “Normal” or “Ordinary”. The Maori are Polynesian and comprise about 14 percent of the country's population. Over 40 % of Maori children live in one-parent families, while there are only 14 % of children in Germany that lives in a one-parent family.
